Aaliyah |
 |
R & B vocalist Aaliyah (Swahili for "exalted one") was born Aaliyah
Haughton in New York in 1979 but grew up in Detroit, where she sang at
church and school. By the time she was 11, Aaliyah was backing Gladys Knight
in Las Vegas; before finishing high school she released her solo debut,
1994's Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, which went platinum thanks to
hits like "Back and Forth" and "At Your Best (You Are Love)." After
marrying her producer, R. Kelly, Aaliyah returned in 1996 with One In a
Million, which featured cameos by rappers Treach and Slick Rick.
In 2000, she contributed four tunes to the Romeo Must Die soundtrack.
The following year, she came out with her latest album, simply titled
Aaliyah.
On August 25, 2001, tragedy struck when Aaliyah was killed in a plane
crash in the Bahamas. The R&B world mourned the death of the gifted
singer, who was only twenty two years old.

Akon |
 |
Senegalese African, AKON moved to the United States when he was seven. His family is headed by legendary percussionist and jazz musician
Mor Thiam, whose expertise for playing the Djembe, a traditional African drum, has been touted as "unrivaled." Being brought up in an
environment that treasures the true artistic value of musicianship and revels in the mastering of instrumental skill has had a momentous
affect on AKON.
AKON began playing several different percussion instruments and eventually embraced hip-hop music and culture, despite his initial disdain
for the genre.
Once hip-hop took over his life, AKON's musical development exploded and he began channeling his energy into writing and producing his own
music. His first single "Bananza (Belly Dance)" exhibits another side of the artist. On this song AKON puts forth a feel-good vibe. Singing
over a seductive and sensual beat, "Bananza (Belly Dance)," is one of AKON's most irresistible tracks. The song integrates a unique up tempo
dance beat with a distinct wind instrumentation floating in the background guaranteed to improve every listener's mood. The reason for this,
AKON says, "There are a lot of negative things going on today." "We need to party and just have fun," he continues, "'Bananza...' is a party
record. You just go in the club, party and enjoy those beautiful women."
However, life does not solely revolve around beautiful women and leisure time and AKON is well aware of this. On the somber, soulful "Ghetto"
and the meditative, impressive "Journey," AKON gives listeners an in-depth look into a harsher world, one that is just as gripping as it is
chilling. But rather than sensationalize his own drama, AKON transmits, to his audience, the feeling of being a part of his inner circle.
Genuine and honest, AKON's music is a step in a new direction: a trajectory that will lead us on a delightfully fulfilling path. Says AKON,
"When I'm on the mic, I'm just giving the listener a part of me." Be prepared to receive it.

Following the success of "Dunia Aku Punya", Anggun returned to the

Tina
Arena |
 |
Today Tina Arena is Australia's most successful female recording artist.
She spent her childhood in the late 70s on national Australian television on
the weekly feel-good Young Talent Time show, where a regular troupe of children
sang the hits of the day and yesterday until each child reached 'retirement'
age and was replaced with another bright, but younger singer. Many of those
children struggled personally and professionally once they were replaced. A
few, after battling to re-establish themselves. have gone on to meaningful
careers in entertainment. Even as a tiny girl known for her big voice and stage
presence Tina Arena dropped from sight for several years following her Young
Talent Time tenure, years she spent trying to get up a recording career,
working the club circuit alone or in bands, or appearing in musicals. In 1990
at the age of 21 she was reinvented as a raunchy disco diva with a national #2
single, "I Need Your Body." It gave her a successful album and more hits, but
was a momentary apparition, because this was never a music style or an image
Tina herself was comfortable with. Another "silent" period followed during
which she appeared in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour
Dreamcoat, and spent some time living in Los Angeles.
Determined to succeed, in 1994 she landed a new Sony recording contract on her
own terms, lauching her new career with the powerful soul ballad "Chains,"
which became a hit world-wide. Her David Tyler produced album Don't Ask was
Australia's biggest selling album of 1995, and the biggest selling album by any
Australian female. Don't Ask sold two million copies globally. She followed
with the Australian triple platinum In Deep, produced by Foreigner's Mick
Jones. 1999 saw Tina with a massive hit in France, and the break-up of her
marriage and business relationship with manager Ralph Carr. After a while, Tina
has joined the french musical comedy "Notre Dame de Paris" (English Version),
she had the role of Esmeralda. In 2003, Tina hit the charts with her single "Never".

Maria Arredondo |
 |
Maria Arredondo was born in 1985 and raised outside the city of Kristiansand in the south of Norway.
Maria has been singing all her life. From the age of 10 she participated in local concerts and events and has as a multi
talented singer done everything from classical to pop music. She spent almost two years in the studio developing her own
style and sound, before signing a licensing deal with Universal Music for Scandinavia.
Her debut album, "Maria Arredondo", got the highest score possible in Norway’s largest nationwide newspaper - VG. The album
debuted in the official sales chart at an impressive no. 6 and have so far sold beyond platinum in Norway.
It was recorded in Sweden and Norway, and was produced by several well known Scandinavian producers such as Jonas von Der
Burg, Espen Lind, Bluefish, Jonny Sjo, Harry Sommerdahl, and Bjørn Erik Pedersen. Several successful songwriters have also
contributed: Christian Ingebrigtsen, Jonas von Der Burg, Silje Nergaard, Espen Lind and Harry Sommerdahl, to name a few.
Her debut song "Can let go" was released on Norwegian radio in May 2002, and proved to be a strong hit all throughout the summer.
The second hit, "Just a little heartache", stayed on the airplay charts for an incredible 35 weeks and peaked at no. 2. It also
received a gold trophy for sales. The next single "In love with an angel", which is a duet with Christian Ingebrigtsen, debuted at
no. 1 in the sales charts and went platinum. It also went to no. 1 on the official airplay chart. The duet received a Norwegian
Grammy Award nomination for "Song Of The year". The ceremony took place in Oslo on February 28th. Her fourth hit single "Hardly
hurts at all" stayed in the charts for several months and went gold.
Her incredible success has made Maria the first artist in Norway which has reached top 3 on the airplay chart with the first four
single releases from a debut album. By the end of 2003 the album has sold more than 1,5 times platinum which is outstanding and
very rare for a debut artist in Norway.
Maria's first single ("Mad Summer") from her second album, became a huge hit last summer and is still going strong, about to go
platinum. The next single "Burning" is now released for radio and it is written by Laila Samuels and Jørn Dahl. It is produced
by DiscLab (Sissel Kyrkjebø, Lene Marlin, Kurt Nielsen). Her new album ("Not going under") was released on the 25th of October 2004.

ATB |
 |
ATB alias André Tanneberger is without a doubt an example of
exceptional producer and artist.
After over eleven years and five ATB albums, the last four of which all
made it into the German Top 10, André has become a leading musician and
producer. Not just on the dance scene. International stars like Heather
Nova, Moby, William Orbit and Michael Cretu from Enigma have called on
his services. He also performed with Bryan Adams at Rock in Rio,
supplied remixes for pop legends like A-ha and has travelled all over the
world to play as a DJ.
André has a unique skill in combining ambient and trance with a wide
variety of musical influences. He delivers dance songs with melancholic
hooks and wonderful harmonious, smooth and relaxed sounds that carry you
away. André has repeatedly laid milestones in modern club music. While
many struggle throughout their careers, André immediately went into
overdrive with his first ATB track "9 P.M. (Till I Come)", which reached
the top of the UK charts in 1999 and brought his music to all continents
of the globe.
His new single "Marrakech", taken from the upcoming album "No Silence",
sees André change his sound again completely, but still
characteristically remain ATB. The song is a great club track that sends out a summer
feeling to get us back for that sunny beach holiday. It even impressed
Hollywood as "Marrakech" was chosen to be the title track for the
action thriller "Mindhunters".
André has worked with various artists again on his fifth album "No
Silence". The first single "Marrakech" was recorded with British vocalist
Tiff Lacey, who previously worked with trance legend Paul Oakenfold.
Canada’s Roberta Carter Harrison, who sang on "Let U Go", "I Don't Wanna
Stop" and "Hold You", is also back on board.
You can also see how important ATB’s message is due to the fact that he
not only produces the music himself and takes his songs to the masses
as a DJ, André Tanneberger also wants to share his knowledge and skills.
He has therefore set up the SEAP in Bochum with his producer partner
and friend Woody. The "School for Engineering and Audio Producing" is a
production school where young ambitious producers can find their way to
a professional career in the music business. The SEAP also provides a
platform for those wanting to perfect their hobby and move beyond their
previous musical and production horizons.
Here are some of the releases of ATB:
Albums: No silence, Addicted to music, Dedicated, Two worlds
Singles: Ecstasy, Marrakech, Long way home, I don't wanna stop, You're
not alone, Hold you, Let U go.

Backstreet Boys |
 |
Nearly 5 years after their last studio album, the Backstreet Boys mark a resolute return with their 5th disc June 14 on Jive Records. The 12-song "Never Gone" reflects the adult ideals of a quintet that broke music and concert sales records the world over, moving more than 73 million albums (30 million in America) since their introduction in 1997.
Certainly, pop culture remains on a first-name basis with the five singers that comprise BSB: Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson. When they scored in the U.S. with the debut platinum single "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)"-followed by such radio staples as "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," "All I Have To Give" and the No. 1 (in 18 nations) "I Want It That Way"- the Backstreet Boys grew to personify an unprecedented and celebrated youth-driven era in popular music.
As teen idols, they sold more than 13 million copies each of their first two U.S. albums, "Backstreet Boys" (1997) and the No. 1 (in 25 nations) "Millennium" (1999). "Black and Blue" followed (2000), moving 8 million copies, and then "Hits: Chapter One" (2001), another platinum triumph. Along the way, the group logged12 top 40 hits, 8 of those reaching the top 10.
Today, nearly a decade since their initial success-and following a healthy 3-year breather-each group member admits that they needed time to catch up, grow up and gain some perspective on the whirlwind of fame.
"We had been touring pretty much non-stop for 7 or 8 years and we were almost living in a bubble; we had lost perspective on a lot of things," Kevin says. "You need to take care of yourself and rest and be able to reflect. This time off gave us a chance to recharge our batteries and step away and see what has happened in our lives, what we have accomplished and to be thankful for the opportunities that we have had and thankful for each other."
Brian became the first Backstreet Father during the break, Kevin took on Broadway and London’s West End with a starring role in "Chicago," Nick put out a solo project and Howie continued his efforts with the Dorough Lupus Foundation after the loss of his oldest sister Caroline in 1998. AJ McLean worked through personal demons with a well-publicized stint in rehab.
"I've been sober for 2 ½ years," AJ says. "I appreciate my family more, these guys more and myself more. Life is great. It's worth living again."
"Never Gone," which BSB spent more than a year recording, accomplishes the formidable task of moving beyond pop idol notoriety to reflect what is happening in the group's lives and in the world. The project features intensely personal, upfront vocals, coupled with production that spares drum loops and synthesizers for a mature, live, more rootsy vibe. Don't worry-the pandemic hooks and velvet harmonies are still there, behind lyrics that tell universal stories of hope, loss, redemption and love.
First single "Incomplete," released in April, proves Backstreet Boys' enduring relevance; in its first week out, the ballad was most-added at radio. By the end of May, the song was climbing the top 10 on Billboard's mainstream top 40 chart as well as the top 5 of Top Digital Downloads. The accompanying video clip reached No. 1 on AOL and garnered rotation on MTV, VH1 and MuchMusic.
Title track, "Never Gone," is among the most moving songs on the album. Written by BSB's Kevin Richardson with Gary Baker and Steve Diamond, the harmony-drenched ballad pays tribute to the death of Kevin's father. It is produced by Mark Taylor.
"That song has really been important to each one of us," AJ says. "In addition to the loss of Kevin’s father, I lost both of my grandparents, Nick his grandmother and Howie his sister. We've all experienced great losses, so this song really touches us personally."
Additional name-brand collaborators that assisted in launching the Backstreet Boys' Chapter 2 include Billy Mann on "Poster Girl", and Switchfoot's John Fields on "Lose It All". Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik contributes "Weird World," a song that examines in life in post 9/11 society.
The guys also worked with John Shanks, the 2005 Grammy Award Producer of the Year ("Safest Place To Hide"); and the venerable Max Martin, who helped catapult to fame Ace of Base, Britney Spears-and BSB, with "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)," "As Long As You Love Me" and "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)."
Martin collaborated on 4 of the 12 songs on "Never Gone," including "Climbing the Walls," a tour de force of conflicting emotion, coupled with a melody so immediately gratifying, you'll be singing along by the second chorus; and the melancholy love song "I Still," which features skyscraping vocals and a magical mesh of harmonies that should be a patented trademark for the Backstreet Boys. Martin also worked with BSB on "Just Want You To Know" and "Siberia."
Being in the studio together for the first time in years, it took the group some time to integrate their different musical influences. But according to AJ, "Once we got with Max, everything shifted and we started going more toward contemporary, alternative pop with a little R&B. We found exactly what we are supposed to be doing for this album. It's more organic, with more live instruments, and a nice departure for us. If we kept on doing what we used to do-with the way music sounds today-people wouldn't care anymore. We had to step ahead of ourselves."
Brian adds, "It was essential for us to grow. If we're not getting better and challenging ourselves, what are we here for?"
Certainly, the average life span of most acts in popular culture is far less than a decade, but the Backstreet Boys are proving that growing with your audience-while staying true to a track record of timeless melodies-cultivates the rare gift of endurance. Indeed, Backstreet's back... again.
"We're excited and we hope our fans are, too," Kevin says. "We're looking forward to a happy, prosperous 2005."

Gnarls Barkley |
 |
The Gnarls Barkley collaboration didn't bring producer Danger Mouse to the top of the British charts for the first time,
but it did mark his debut as the pilot of a hit record. Mouse, born Brian Burton, first gained the ears of discriminating
listeners when he concocted The Grey Album, a bootleg that mashed the vocals from The Black Album by Jay-Z with music
samples courtesy of The White Album by EMI flagship the Beatles. Although the label posted a cease-and-desist order, one
of their employees, Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, was one of the impressed, and he hired Burton to create the beats
for the second Gorillaz album, Demon Days.
Just one year later, Danger Mouse was back in the charts with another collaboration project, Gnarls Barkley, with singer
Cee-Lo Green (a solo artist and former member of Atlanta's Goodie Mob).
The pair had met in Atlanta in the late '90s, and began recording together around the time of a 2003 DM record titled
Ghetto Pop Life. A few recordings were passed around and played by many associated with the pair, and eventually one
of the leaked tracks, "Crazy," became a hot property for the download market. It became the first single vaulted to the
top of the British charts by digital distribution, and the resulting album, St. Elsewhere, peaked at number one on the
album charts. An American release followed two weeks later.

Daniel Bedingfield |
 |
Daniel Bedingfield has become a young U.K. garage sensation ever since his
explosive single "Gotta Get Thru This" topped the British dance charts in 2001.
Having been rejected by a handful of London record labels, he took matters into
his own hands: After recording the majority of what would soon be his debut
album in his bedroom, he unassumingly sent the soon-to-be hit to a few major
DJs. Soon after garage impresario EZ picked it up and added it to the Pure
Garage 4 compilation, "Gotta Get Thru This" took off and the 22-year-old, New
Zealand-born singer-songwriter was suddenly the center of a bidding war.
Bedingfield was raised in Southeast London and began writing songs at age 6. A
few years later, he formed a group called DNA Algorhythm with his sisters,
Natasha and Nikola; the family trio played gigs at their mother's counseling
seminars and some nationwide festivals. At age 16, Bedingfield got his first
synthesizer, which led him onto the musical path that he walks today.
After his single's initial success, Bedingfield eventually signed to Polydor
U.K. and Island Records and recorded his full-length album, also titled "Gotta
Get Thru This", an irresistible array of dance-garage anthems and ebullient
R&B harmonies with a funk/teen-pop aura. Bedingfield has described it what
Sting, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder would sound like jamming together in
a basement, though in reality most of the writing and recording took place in
his humble London flat with the help of one computer, one microphone, and some very forgiving neighbors.
Daniel took part in the recording of the "Band Aid 20" single, 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'.
The awesome track - featuring top artists such as Bono, Dido and Coldplay's Chris Martin - was released
on November 29th 2004.
Daniel was very inspired for the tracks of his new album, "Second First Impression?". His latest single
"Nothing hurts like love" hit Star Radio's Top 40 charts !

Bodies Without Organs |
 |
New Swedish band 'Bodies Without Organs' (or BWO). BWO is a synth-pop band featuring Martin Rolinski (lead vocals, laptop), Marina Schiptjenko
(vocals, laptop) and Alexander Bard (laptop).
Born in Gothenburg, Martin's favorite artists are The Beatles, Elton John and Abba. As for Anna, it is ELO, Gary Numan and Brian Eno.
Alexander's ambition is to make BWO even bigger than his previous music projects. Addressing a couple of lines dedicated to their fans,
he says: "I hope I'm better now at handling contacts with the fans. I used to be so shy, but I'm getting better at being social. The fans
are sooo important, they are half the show".
The 'Living In A Fantasy' single came out in May, and the debut album was released on the 6-th of December 2005. Many singles have been
played on Star Radio and their latest single reached N°1 on Star Radio's Top 40 early in 2006 (at the time of the writing of this bio).

Bosson |
 |
26-year old Staffan Olsson, better known to friends and fans as Bosson
(pronounced b_-sahn) started his career in Los Angeles, when powerhouse
KIIS-FM Music Director Michael Steele took the lead in spinning "We
Live." "Uptempo and as bright as a searchlight," Billboard raved of the
single, calling it "one of the most promising new cuts we've heard. The
track took off, working its way into the hearts and minds (and phone-in
request lines) of radio listeners in L.A., soon spreading to the rest
of the country.
Within weeks, the single was finding a widespread fan base from Detroit
and Seattle to Philadelphia, Washington DC, Miami-West Palm and beyond.
Those fans have eagerly embraced the second single, "Where Are You,"
with its yearning notions of romance and longing. Billboard proclaimed,
the "lovely mid-tempo ballad will find instant appeal with top 40,
thanks to Bosson's youthful (but not childish) vocals, chugging production
and simple hook."
With two solidly received singles under his belt now, "We Live" and
"Where Are You," and a springtime U.S. tour with Britney Spears and LFO
behind him, Bosson has cleared the first rung of success in this country.
His first album was released inn 1999, "The Right Time".
Already touring and recording veteran in his native Sweden, Bosson's
roots are in the same Stockholm-based studio scene that spawned producer
Max Martin (of 'N Sync, Britney Spears, and Backstreet Boys renown).
Bosson developed his abilities as a composer, lyricist, programmer and
vocalist while recording at his home apartment studio in Gothenburg, the
largest city in the southwest of Sweden.
He credits his family for the enormous support they gave him while he
was growing up. He spent his childhood in the town of SŠrš (in the very
same Ôhood as Ulf Ekberg of Ace Of Base), some 20 km to the south of
Gothenburg by the Kattegat Sea. Bosson got the music bug at age of six,
performing songs during the Lucia festival before Christmas for a small,
enthusiastic audience. Early fascination with radio-friendly,
melody-driven domestic Swedish pop turned into an all-out obsession with modern
R&B as a teenager in the early 90s: Boyz II Men, Jodeci, and Babyface.
From the Euro-dance format (with its heavy reliance on house and techno
beats) which characterized his earlier music of the '90s, Bosson has
now evolved into the more worldly guitar pop of the phenomenal "We Live"
and "Where Are You."
In 2001, Bosson released his second album ”One in a million”. Two years
of extreme focus on him as an international artist and a lot of
promotional work for the mega hit ”One in a million” has passed.
Bosson, has experienced much more than many other Swedish pop stars.
”One in a million” was chosen to be the lead music theme for the movie
”Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock. She personally called him and
invited him to the set in Austin, Texas. He was nominated for a Golden
Globe and standing on the red carpet on the gala he realized how far his
music had taken him. The hard work as a writer and producer finally
paid off. And what a result! ”One in a million” became a top 10 hit in
Europe and Asia; he has toured with Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears and
has played for more than 70 000 people in the audience. He has also
written songs for Amy Grant and the famous guitarist Al Di Miola.
In 2003 he started his work with ”Rockstar”. By being involved in all
of the songs on ”Rockstar”, Bosson proves that he is a very good
songwriter and producer. Years of training by the computer and the mixer have
made him a very talented music creator.
After a year of hard work in the studio, Bosson and Peter Boström, who
produced ”One in a million”, finally could finish Rockstar. With an
album where every song is strong enough to be a single, Bosson hopes to
reach the same success as with ”One in a million”.
Some critics say that his music is too commercial to have a deeper
meaning but that is a too simple way to reject his lyrics. Bosson describes
his music as a symbol for ”naive” feelings, and the songs do have a
deep meaning. He wants people to feel a connection with the music. The
songs can be about everything from love, every day situations, six years
old niece Noa, a non accepted love affair between people with different
religious believes, to the feelings when someone you love pass away.
It’s a good thing when people can feel that they are not alone with their
feelings. Thousands of e-mails and letters from fans prove that.
”Rockstar” continues where ”One in a million” ends. The first single of
his album was "You opened my eyes" followed by "A little more time".
His latest single (at the time of last update of this bio) was "Efharisto".

Sarah Connor |
 |
Born in 1980 in Delmenhorst (Germany), Sarah has four younger sisters and one younger brother. Her love to music
started with
Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson.
In the spring of 2001, with her debut single "Let’s Get Back To Bed-Boy!", Sarah Connor hit the bulls-eye. By the
side of US star TQ she jumped immediately to Number 2 in the German Single Charts, reached Top Ten ranking in
countries all over Europe, and made the number 15 spot in the European Top 100. After just a few weeks, Gold Records
in Germany and Austria followed, and the music channel VIVA award her a Comet in the category of National Newcomer.
Just a few months later, with From Sarah with Love, the then-21 year old recording artist took success to another
level. The single enjoyed Number One status in the German Single Charts for a whole week, and after only a few days
hit Gold, not stopping until it reached sales of over 750,000, earning Triple Gold status. In Austria and
Switzerland as well, the single scored Gold and Platinum records, respectively.
The first album, Green Eyed Soul, continued the tradition of success by going right to Number 3 in the German
charts, hitting Gold after a week, not stopping until it achieved Triple Gold Status with 450,000 CDs sold, peaking
proudly at Number 2.
Little wonder that Europe-wide success for Sarah wasn’t long in coming: in Finland, Greece, Poland, Austria,
Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands, Sarah Connor charted in the Top 10, and took either Gold or Platinum honors.
In the summer of 2002, the Echo-Award-Winner (category: Female National Rock/Pop Artist) realized a life-long dream,
mounting a major Tour and playing to sold-out venues across the country.
Whoever assumed that this Gemini would need to take a breather after all this amazing success would have been
mistaken: with her friend and idol Wyclef Jean, Sarah went into the recording studio and after only one night
created the appropriately-titled One Nite Stand (Of Wolves and Sheep), a hot track which Wyclef not only wrote and
produced for Sarah, but sang on with her as well.
One Nite Stand (Of Wolves and Sheep) was the first release off Sarah’s second album Unbelievable, and reached Gold
status in an unbelievable 48 hours.
In the middle of 2003, Sarah surprised her fans with very special news: she was pregnant! Before taking her
Maternity Leave, however, Sarah had her second Number One Hit in Germany with Music Is The Key, a track with the
New York a cappella band Naturally Seven. Her next conquest was reaching the pole position in the charts with her
first DVD, A Night To Remember-Pop Meets Classic!
In November 2003 Sarah released her third album, Key To My Soul, which imitated its predecessor and went immediately
Gold and later Platinum in Germany, entering the charts in the Top 10. The second single from this album Just One
Last Dance (feat. Natural) also went straight to no. 1 in the German charts and reached gold.
As wonderful as all this musical success has been for Sarah, the greatest joy in her life came in Florida, on the
2nd of February, 2004... for it was on this day that Sarah’s son Tyler was born.
Although Sarah finds herself enjoying a well-earned Maternity Leave at the moment, she continues to achieve new
milestones in her career:
Her US debut single Bounce charted in the beginning of March '04, and zoomed to number 11 in the US Airplay Charts.
And the UK wasn't far behind, as Bounce hit number 14 in the British Single Charts only a few weeks later. With
this, Sarah fulfilled the secret dream of all musicians: a breakthrough in the USA & UK!
Her latest single "Living to love you" is out now.

James Blunt |
 |
James Blunt’s family have served in one kind of army or another since 995A.D. A long line of warriors. Savages really.
Not a musical bone in any one of their bodies. The only music he heard growing up was "Happy Birthday" and "Silent Night".
His father considered all music, even classical, to be unnecessary noise.
Aged fourteen he just held the teenage conviction that he would have an interesting life – maybe that’s why he picked the guitar?
Then again, maybe if he hadn’t, he would have tripped over it. He went to University and studied Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering
and Sociology, spending most lectures asleep on the floor at the back. In much the same way, he ended up in the army. In essence,
one day he was sleeping off a hangover at the back of a sociology lecture hall and the next thing he knew he was in Kosovo with
a gun and a guitar strapped to the side of a tank, wondering who he could possibly sleep with to get out of this war. To break
up the super attenuated monotony, James would sometimes stroll through Serb villages wearing an East German cap singing, "All
we are saying is give peace a chance". "We were peace-keepers at that point," he explained, shrugging helplessly.
So how did the music get into him, you might ask? Well, James came to Los Angeles in September 2003 to record with Tom Rothrock et al.
At night he’d go to bars, bringing with him his valuable British accent (in the U.K., too posh for some people – in LA, the best thing
she’d heard all night) and the fact that like 50 Cent he’d been shot at numerous times, but unlike the Cent, had dodged the bullets.
One song, "Goodbye My Lover", was recorded in his landladies’ bathroom ("She was a frequenter of mental hospitals and in general, a freak –
but pleasant") where, naturally, she kept a piano.
From birth in a military hospital in Tidworth, to Harrow School, to Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering, to the Royal Military Academy
Sandhurst, to The Household Cavalry, to Kosovo, to Buckingham Palace, to a recording studio in Los Angeles. How did James get from there to here?
Only James Blunt’s hairdresser knows for certain, and either he isn’t talking or James cuts his own hair, and it’s up to you to join the dots –
there are ten of them on the album. The single "You're Beautiful" has made it in charts all over the planet and went to N°1 on Star Radio's
international Top 40.

Celine Dion |
 |
When big-voiced French-Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion burst onto the
international music scene in 1991, it was apparent that the female
counterpart to Michael Bolton had emerged. Whether that was a necessary or
desirable development is a matter of some debate, but the fact remains
that Dion has joined the equally operatic Bolton as a fixture in the
upper reaches of the charts.
The youngest of 14 children, Quebec native Dion recorded her first demo
at age 12, which caught the ear of local Svengali Rene Angelil. By the
time Dion was 22, she had recorded four pop albums in French under
Angelil's guidance, all of which went platinum in Canada. In 1991 Dion
signed with Epic U.S., delivering Unison, her first album in English, later
that year. The overblown ballad "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" gave a
taste of what was to come from Dion musically, and hit number four on
the American charts. The following year, Dion dueted with Peabo Bryson on
the top-10 theme to Disney's animated Beauty And The Beast; she also
undertook her first U.S. tour, opening for Bolton. A cover of Patti
LaBelle's "If You Asked Me To" from Dion's second album (partly produced by
master of bombast David Foster), reached number four later in 1992.
Dion racked up her first U.S. number one in 1994 with a cover of Jennifer
Rush's "The Power Of Love."
Her third English album, The Colour Of My Love, became her most
successful worldwide and in America, reaching number four. Late in 1994, Dion
married the 52-year old Angelil.
In 1996, Dion enjoyed her second U.S. number one with "Because You
Loved Me" from the movie Up Close And Personal, by song-doctor Dianne
Warren. An album, Falling Into You, followed; it included a memorably
histrionic version of the Eric Carmen's already histrionic "All By Myself."
Dion picked up a Grammy for the album in early 1997, further cementing
her place as one of the most successful pop acts today.
All that would pale to the titanic heights Dion would reach the
following year. Dion's maudlin "My Heart Will Go On" not only topped the
singles chart, it helped the Titanic soundtrack become the best-selling
album of 1998. The song was also included on the year's number two seller,
Dion's own Let's Talk About Love.
If the commercial success wasn't enough, Dion added to her trophy shelf
when the James Horner-penned tune won an Academy Award for best
original song from a motion picture, the second Dion-sung song to score the
honor, following her recording of "Beauty And The Beast."
Later in 1998, Dion returned to her roots with the release of S'il
Suffisait D'aimer, recorded entirely in French. The holiday album These Are
Special Times followed.
In 1999, Dion issued All The Way. . .A Decade Of Song, a greatest hits
collection that featured seven new songs. However, all things must come
to an end, or at least go on hiatus, and that's what Dion did following
a 1999 New Year's Eve performance.
During her time off, Dion gave birth to a son sired by her
manager/husband Angelil. Following a two-year break, in which her rare public
performances included her singing "God Bless America" at the America: A
Tribute To Heroes telethon honoring victims of the September 11, 2001
terrorist attacks, Dion re-emerged with A New Day Has Come. Naturally, the
album debuted at Number One, becoming Dion's first chart-topping debut,
and fourth Number One album.
Dion returned in March 2003 with another new studio effort, One Heart.
However, the singer won't tour to support the album in the traditional
sense. Instead, she's taking up residency at Caesars Palace Coliseum in
Las Vegas, where she'll appear five nights a week through 2006.
Also in 2003, Dion released a french album that hit the charts everywhere... as usual:-)
